All about CIM

When I came back home I got asked about the congress and I really didn't know what to say. On one hand, I didn't have any expectations for CIM so it didn't disappoint me. In fact, I realised things that I already knew on which I hadn't thought over. But even with that, I don't feel completely satisfied. I missed realism instead of so much idealism.

Cuando de vuelta a casa me preguntaron que tal había ido el congreso no supe muy bien que contestar. Por un lado, la pura verdad es que yo no tenía ninguna expectativa hacia el CIM así que de alguna manera no me defraudó. De hecho me sirvió para hacerme ver cosas que ya sabía pero sobre las que no había reflexionado. Pero incluso con eso no salí totalmente satisfecha. Eché en falta un poco de realismo en un mar de ideas.

The inaugural conference "Fashion and luxury in age of hypermodernity" was given by the French sociologist Gilles Lipovetsky. He had the time to state such interesting ideas as "masstige = mass + prestige" refering the collaborations between well-known designers with H&M or Topshop. He also talked about the power of the distributors or how the trend in today's fashion is individualism which is in itself a contradiction.

La conferencia inaugural "Moda y lujo en la era hipermoderna" fue impartida por el sociólogo francés Gilles Lipovetsky. En ella tuvo tiempo para plantear ideas tan interesantes como el "masstige = mass + prestige" refiriéndose a las colaboraciones que hacen reconocidos diseñadores con marcas como H&M o Topshop. También habló sobre el poder de los distribuidores o de como la tendencia es la moda en la actualidad, lo que es en si mismo una contradicción.

Later we heard the Italian semiologist Omar Calabresse rambling about men fashion. It was, in my opinion, one of the worst lectures because he only talked about history -had I known that, I'd have stayed at home reading a book about the topic-.

Después pudimos escuchar al semiólogo italiano Omar Calabresse irse por las ramas hablando sobre "El Hombre Elegante". Para mi fue una de las peores conferencias porqué solo hizo referencias históricas, y para eso que quereís que os diga, me hubiese quedado en casa leyendo un libro sobre el tema.

After an exhausting morning we could enjoy a well deserved break. In the afternoon, we attended "Fashion as a cultural metronome" by Jorge Lozano, one of the most interesting and witty lectures without a doubt. He said things like: "The regular change of fashion indicates the dynamic nature of society [...] but there are fashions that want to last."

Tras una mañana agotadora pudimos disfrutar de un merecido descanso y así cargar pilas para asistir a la conferencia de Jorge Lozano, " La Moda: Metrónomo Cultural" que fue sin duda una de las charlas más interesantes e ingeniosas. Dijo cosas como que "El cambio regular de la moda indica la naturaleza dinámica de la sociedad[...] pero hay modas que quieren durar y son independientes de las velocidades externas".

Last but not least "The humanistic function of fashion" a philosophical vision of this world by Alfredo Cruz Prados. According to Cruz Prados, "fashion has a humanistic function because it's culture [...] With fashion we're not just meeting our bare necessities, we are also developing our being. It's a language because it express something that we couldn't tell only with our body.*

Último, pero no por ello menos importante "La función humanizadora de la moda" de Alfredo Cruz Prados que aportó una visión filosófica de éste mundo. Según Cruz Prados, "la moda tiene una función humanizadora porqué es cultura [...] Con la moda estamos cultivando nuestro estar para no hacer presente el cuerpo ni sus necesidades. La moda es un lenguaje porqué expresa algo que no podríamos expresar solo con nuestro cuerpo."

Obviously, there were more lectures but I want to bore you no more so, I highlighted the most interesting ones.

I'm leaving tomorrow for Madrid to attend The International Congress of Fashion. I won't take my computer with me because I'll have neither the time nor the desire to write. I know perfectly well I haven't posted that much the last months and I apologize for it. I am just tired of everything, but I hope I'll get my act together by Monday.

Mañana me marcho a Madrid al congreso internacional de moda y no volveré hasta el próximo domingo. No me llevo el portátil porqué no tendré ni el tiempo ni las ganas necesarias para escribir. Se perfectamente que no he posteado mucho estos últimos meses y pido disculpas por ello. Simplemente estoy un poco cansada de todo esto. Pero espero volver el lunes con las pilas cargadas y muchas cosas que contar.

The net is overflowing with shops, so I guess finding a way to stand out must be a difficult task. However, Très bien shop does it very well thanks to an excelent styling and a minimalist aesthetic -always with a twist-.

La red está desbordada con montones de tiendas de muy diversa índole, así que supongo que destacar ha de ser una ardua tarea. Pero Très Bien shop lo consigue gracias a una excelente labor de estilismo y una magnífica selección de diseñadores de estética minimalista, pero con un toque muy distintivo.

I personally prefer the rollnecks from the Swedish designer Carin Wester, Ann-Sofie Back cardigans and Wood-Wood rolled-up chinos.

Australian fashion doesn't cease to surprise me. Even more since I discovered Morrison a young and whimsical line whose main aim is to flatter the women body. Furthermore, the clothes are made with organic materials which makes of them comfortable pieces to wear all day long.

La moda australiana no deja de sorprenderme. Y más desde que he descubierto Morrison una línea muy juvenil y romántica cuyo objetivo principal es favorecer el cuerpo femenino. Además las prendas están hechas con materiales orgánicos que hacen de ellas unas piezas comfortables que pueden llevarse durante todo el día.

The Family

While rummaging through a drawer I found by chance the pic above. It dates from 1919 and the boy (yes you read well, it's a boy) in the center is my grandad. He was two years old and he had just returned from US after her mum died giving birth to her second child.

Mientras rebuscaba en un cajón, me encontré por casualidad la foto que veis arriba. Data de 1919, y el niño (sí, habeis leído bien, es chico) que está en el centro es mi abuelo. Tenía dos años y acababa de volver de Estados Unidos después de que su madre muriese dando a luz a su segundo hijo.

It strikes me to see how elegant they looked despite the sorrow and their difficult economic circumstances. Obviously, the photo was planned and so the clothes. However, looking at them I came to realize that nowadays we talk so much about the democratization of fashion but it doesn't show. It seems to me we are moving backwards in terms of quality and taste.

Me sorprendió mucho ver lo elegantes que eran a pesar del dolor y de las dificultades económicas por las que pasaban. Obviamente, tanto la foto como la ropa eran algo planeado. Pero me ha servido para darme cuenta de que aunque hoy en día se nos llene la boca al hablar de la democratización de la moda al final no se nota. Parece que vamos hacia atrás en lo que a cuestión de gustos y calidades se refiere.

Yesterday, a pleasant surprise was waiting in my mailbox: a copy of Fly Magazine had arrived. It's difficult to explain with words all the feelings that I felt across my body seeing the result of a great project.

Ayer recibí una grata sorpresa en mi buzón, mi copia de Fly Magazine había llegado. Es difícil expresar con palabras todos los sentimientos que recorrieron mi cuerpo al ver el resultado de éste gran proyecto.

First of all, Fly Magazine is not your typical magazine because it is edited in dvd. This fact allows them to go beyond fashion and make us appreciate details that photography cannot transmit. Besides, clothes don't play a principal role which for me is a needed and relieving change. There are four parts that include: editorials, music, documentaries/short films and what they call the loop (a sort of remix of the previous categories).

Para empezar, Fly Magazine no es una revista al uso porqué se edita en dvd. Éste hecho les permite ir más allá y hacernos apreciar detalles que la fotografía no puede transmitir. Ahora, la ropa no juega un papel principal, lo que para mi es un cambio necesario y liberador. Además, está divida en cuatro partes que incluyen: editoriales, música, documentales/cortos y lo que ellos llaman the loop (una especie de remix de todo el contenido).

Inspired by Limi Feud's collection for fall 08 I purchased -on impulse- a cable knit cardigan. I bought it on retrogarb, one of my favourite vintage shops on etsy (she actually used to sell on e-bay).

My cardi is more childlike than Feud's but it's exactly what I was looking for. I seriously need it to wear with dresses overall.

Inspirada por el desfile de invierno 08 de Limi Feud me he comprado en un arrebato una chaqueta de ochos blanca. La adquirí en retrogarb, una de mis tiendas favoritas de etsy (solía vender en e-bay).

Mi chaqueta es más infantil que la de Feud, pero es exactamente lo que estaba buscando. Necesitaba algo así para ponerme con vestidos sobretodo.

Everybody seems to agree in the huge gap between Paris fashion week and the rest of fashion weeks. Personally, I don't fancy looking at the shows on style.com, but Paris is different. I see every single show without exception.

Todo el mundo parece estar de acuerdo en la gran diferencia que hay entre la semana de la moda de París y el resto de semanas de la moda. Personalmente, no me gusta mirar los desfiles en style.com, pero París es distinto. Me veo todas y cada una de las colecciones sin excepción.

Blame it on the white, the tulle, sheerness or ruffles but the delicacy of Undercover inmediately caught my eye.

No se si ha sido el blanco, el tul, las transparencias o los volante pero Undercover llamó mi atención inmediatamente.

Michela is the designer behind the Roma-based label aroma30. She started drawing, sewing and knitting at an early age, soon realizing that fashion was her thing. She studied at the Costume and Fashion Academy in Rome and Central St. Martins. Later she worked for such important italian brands as Salvatore Ferragamo or Valentino.

Michela es la diseñadora detrás de la marca con base en Roma aroma30. Empezó a dibujar, coser y tejer siendo una niña, dándose pronto cuenta de que la moda era lo suyo. Comenzó su formación en la academia de moda de Roma para continuar en Central St. Martins. Ha trabajado para marcas italianas tan importantes como Salvatore Ferragamo o Valentino.

What drived you to launch your own label? When I was working for other labels I read about all these young designers from London or Berlin in magazines, so I started thinking :"Hey, a lot of people out there is doing it so why can't I?". I developed my very first collection of five unique pieces, not too seriously, I enjoyed myself a lot doing it and people was paying attention so I thought it would have been a good idea to go on...

Cuando estaba trabajando para otras marcas leía en las revistas sobre todos estos jóvenes diseñadores de Londres y Berlín, y comencé a pensar : "Ey, mucha gente ahí fuera lo está haciendo, ¿por qué no yo?". Mi primera colección estaba compuesta por 5 piezas, nada demasiado serio, pero me lo pasé bien haciéndolo y además la gente le prestaba atención, por eso pensé que sería una buena idea seguir...

What inspired you to do this collection? I haven't got particular inspirations while designing. I do a huge research of photographs of landscapes or portraits of people. I love the light and the colours or the mood of some images. I develop shapes and volumes by drawing or working on the dummy. This collection arised from an exploration of monochromatic contrasts. I loved the idea to experiment intricate details and shapes through different textures and light effects on black.

¿Qué te inspiró a la hora de realizar ésta colección? No me inspiro en nada en particular mientras diseño. Investigo sobre fotografías de paisajes o retratos. Me encanta la luz, los colores o la atmósfera de algunas imágenes. Desarrollo formas y volúmenes dibujando o trabajando sobre un maniquí. Ésta colección surgió de la exploración sobre contrastes monocromáticos. Me encantaba la idea de experimentar con formas y detalles complicados a través de diferentes texturas o efectos sobre negro.

Which garment are you most proud of? I'm not a proud person, I'm more a perfectionist one, so I use to think forward, looking if something can be done better. However, I'm satisfied when a garment has a wow-effect, is wearable and has a right price.

¿De qué pieza te sientes más orgullosa? No soy una persona orgullosa, soy perfeccionista, por eso trato de mirar hacia delante intentando ver si algo puede ser hecho mejor. Aunque me siento satisfecha cuando una prenda tiene un efecto wow, es ponible y además tiene el precio justo.

I've seen your t-shirts on your myspace. What are they all about? T-shirts are not exactly a project, they are not even in my collection. I started doing them for myself and friends, then a lot of people were asking me if they could buy some and that's all. Most of the t-shirts are hand-drawn simply because I like doing it. People know they can have an illustrated t-shirt on demand and it would be done as one of a kind piece. I used to draw t-shirts also for people I'd like to wear them and that explains why you've seen so many bands on myspace.

He visto tus camisetas en tu myspace. ¿Sobre que va todo eso? Las camisetas no son exactamente un proyecto, ni siquiera están dentro de mi colección. Empecé a hacerlas para mi y mis amigos, y después un montón de gente comenzó a preguntarme si podía comprarlas, eso es todo. La mayoría de las camisetas están pintadas a mano, simplemente porqué me gusta hacerlo. La gente sabe que puede comprar una camiseta ilustrada que es única. También solía dibujar camisetas para gente a la que me gustaba vérselas llevar y eso explica que hayas visto tantas bandas con ellas puestas en myspace.

The Korean-born designer Yegang Yoo has an impressive curriculum. After graduating from Y&Kei in Seoul, she moved to New York to study at the prestigious Parsons school where she developed her characteristic pattern making skills.

She has worked for such important brands as Hussein Chalayan, Vena Cava, Rachel Comey or Jens Laugesen. However, she recently decided to took the plunge and launch her own line introducing her very first collection for Autumn/Winter 08-09.

These pants are my favourite piece from the whole collection. I've never seen anything similar before.

Next season's collection is constructed around geometric concepts, resulting in a bunch of clean lined garments. Everything is meticulously done, giving rise to highly wearable minimalistic pieces made of great quality.

During this time, NY fashion week ended passing the baton to London (which is, in general, closer to my taste). I'm not a fan of doing show reviews, because we have the great Sarah Mower for that. However, Charles Anastase will be an exception.

I'm not used to wear statement jewellery because I prefer to be more daring with the rest of my outfit. But I'd happily do an exception with this Vice & Vanity necklace. It will look good paired with a simple AA Tri-blend t-shirt in athletic grey. But no, I can't, I must restrain myself from buying anything until October (I've already bought 3 dresses this month!).

Normalmente no suelo llevar joyas muy contundentes porqué prefiero ser más osada con el resto de mi ropa. Pero fácilmente haría una excepción con este collar de Vice & Vanity. Quedaría muy bien con una camiseta gris de AA. Pero no, no puedo, tengo que contenerme de comprar nada por lo menos hasta octubre (ya me he comprado tres vestidos solo este mes!).

The influence of blogs doesn't cease to astonish me. Not only they had the ability to be first -opposite traditional media- informing the news, but also they are starting to create trends.

Cada día me sorprendo más de la capacidad de influencia que tienen los blogs. No solo por la ventaja que tienen para adelantarse a la noticia frente a los medios tradicionales, sino también porqué con más frecuencia crean tendencia.

Bloggers like Rumi or Gala are showing a great ability to create trends between their readers. Thanks to the immediacy of the net, the cropped tops - so typical of the 90's- are spreading like wildfire.

Paulo Melim Andersson's third and latest show for Chloé is the only one I liked from all the collections he designed for the French house. But it wasn't love at first sight, it took time to grow on me. Alas! the more I see it the more I like it. And for me that's good, very good indeed.

Chiffon for winter? Yes, please! Better if paired with such a masculine fabric as tweed. The contrast is genius.

However, it saddens me to know Melim didn't have the time to show all his talent.

La que ha sido la tercera y última colección de Paulo Melim Andersson para Chloé, es la única que realmente me ha gustado. No fue amor a primera vista. Podría decirse que esta colección ha ido ganándose mi aprobación poco a poco, a fuerza de verla en las revistas y de fijarme en los detalles. Y eso es bueno, muy bueno.

¿Chiffon para el invierno? Sí, ¡por favor! Y más si viene combinado con un tejido tan típico del armario masculino como el tweed. El contraste es genial.

Es una pena que Melim no haya dispuesto del suficiente tiempo para demostrar todo su talento.

Reading Vogue Collections I came to realize how austerity dominated the majority of winter shows. Houses like Prada, Junya Watanabe, Jil Sander or Nina Ricci who at first are very different aesthetically speaking, converged to show us gothic, sinister and lugubrious collections.

The crisis is not affecting fashion in monetary terms, but the influence is clear when it comes to creativity: black colour and clean lines are the norm.

I also see an inspiration from German romanticism: Werther, Friedrich...you name it. Either way, I'm in love with this trend and all that represents because it's time to be more thoughtful about our consumption patterns.
