Happy New Year (?)

clock

The text above is an extract from "Relato con un fondo de agua" by Julio Cortázar. It hasn't been translated to English yet and honestly, I don't have the guts to do it. It is about getting older and I can't help but identify with it. A horrible year ends and another one starts full of uncertainities. The abyss gets bigger, while choices instead of giving peace only bring confusion. I miss the simplicity of innocence but I rejoice in the complexity of adulthood. Pure contradiction. The only way to escape is letting yourself go, grasping the opportunities whenever they show up even knowing they 'll only lead to frustration.

Gift wrapping

wonderland room 2
wonderland room

It is said that what really matters is the inside, but I've always believed the way we present things says a lot too. Wonderland Room is an etsy shop specialized in packaging, which can get you out of some troubles at this time of the year. It has plenty of options: from tap to fabric, stationery, lace doily or stickers. So let's try to be original for once with our gift wrapping; our loved ones will notice the details.

All the pictures belong to "Hierarchies of intimacy" a photographic series, accompanied with a text that I include here because it defines better than I could ever do the meaning of these pictures.

"Intimacy is difficult to define as a concept. It's a subject full of nuances that can't escape the personal view, closely linked to empirical knowledge, to the encounter with the other and what evolves from it. To see the other as a real mirror in which it is possible to see our reverse; to distinguish the shadow that takes place in the embrace, it contains the essence of the intimacy we are able to endure. Loneliness is imposible, the different levels of absence have something to do with the thought of getting involved with others and the ability to receive for our own welfare."

Peter Henry Emerson

During the last part of the nineteenth century, when photography wasn't even considered an art form, Peter Henry Emerson was able to develop his own language.Unlike his colleagues, he began to portrait typical scenes, focusing on country life. His innate composition talent makes his work incredibly mature for that time period, showing the harshness and solitude of farm labours. All in all, it's a document of inestimable value.

Wool and the gang

wool and the gang
wool and the gang annabelle-dexter-jones-watg-02

Holiday season is fast approaching and whether we like it or not, it's time to start looking for presents. Wool and the gang is an alternative for those who want something special. Basically, what they sell is a kit that contains: wool, needles, pattern and some easy instructions. You do the rest. The only con for me is the price, but if you are experienced you can also buy single yarns of wool (definitely cheaper), plus you can also find free patterns on their site. Anyhow, if you really want to indulge yourself with a Kurt Cobain inspired sweater or an oversized chunky scarf, they are sure worth it.

On a day like today when the only thing you want to do is take the sofa by storm and do nothing, the images from Aroma30 new collection are truly evocative. Tulle, silk and pleats are mixed tooking us to a more appealing scenario, all thanks to the imagination.

Cartier-Bresson used to said that "your first 10.000 ph
otographs are your worst." I don't know if at only nineteen, Lieke Romeijn has reached that figure yet but the quality of her images doesn't dissapoint.

iam blog

María Revuelta y Núria del Moral are Las Coleccionistas. Their very first project was a photography studio but as they like to push boundaries, they have expanded their business with notebooks and handmade necklaces. Not so long ago, I purchased one of the said notebooks and I couldn't be any happier. The size is perfect, the design is unbeatable and best of all it's not heavy! You just have to add a rubber band so everything stays in its place et voilá!

Uta Barth

uta barth

Uta Barth's pictures are really different from what we are accustomed to. However, that difference it is not a cause of distress, on the contrary; her photos evoke calmness. Objects don't distract the eye, it's only a matter of seeing and letting yourself go. In short: it is about getting lost in the vast reality around us, fixing the gaze on nothing.

Dot, Dot, Dot!

The time for scarves is approaching inexorably but before we're forced to wrap ourselves in mountains of wool, we can look for alternatives in the male wardrobe, i.e.; the classic silk polka dot scarf.

Harry Callahan

callahan_sfmoma_lg

Harry Callahan proves that it's never too late to start anything. He bought his first camera when he was almost thirty. It went from hobbie to a full time job and he actually became one of the most influential photographers of the twentieth century. The strenght of his pictures, in which composition plays a crucial role, is inefable. As he said "experience is the best teacher of all" and his work remind us that perseverance can bring great things.

Paul Strand

strand_wall_street

Paul Strand defined himself "as an explorer who has spent his life on a long voyage of discovery." His restlesness led him to portray the world in a new and unusual way. He adapted his art to a relative time and reality that went from the aseptic Wall Street to the traditional Sicilian family. Moreover, he was able to transgress the classic principles of photography, becoming one of his greatests masters.

Apiece apart

Apiece apart is one of the most interesting and promising brands to emerge these past years. Laura Cramer and Starr Hout, the designers behind the label, get inspired by modern arquitecture to create their silhouettes. But, in terms of fashion, what they're truly looking for is both inmortality and practicality. They want clothes to last and to be worn, which taking into account the new ways of consumerism, is such a wise move.

Jim French

jim french

Today's post is dedicated to a certain picture instead of a photographer. Its author was Jim French and it was the image that illustrated The Smiths first single; Hand in Glove. Its strong homoerotic charge matched the lyrics perfectly, but made it controversial. The song didn't reach the success it deserved when it first camed out but, for me, its sleeve is one of the best in pop music history.

DIY: Red velvet brooch

59615713

I like the collection Alexa Chung did for Madewell overall, but I find it a bit over-priced -especially taking into account most of them are pieces you can easily find at the high-street-. No where to be found here, I content myself using it as a mere source of inspiration.

materials

After seeing the first picture, I remembered I lost the bead that dangled from one of my favourite brooches. It was then when I thought I could do something with the remains. I only needed a bit of red velvet ribbon. If you want to repeat it at home is pretty easy; you'll need an old brooch (in case you don't have one, you can find tons in etsy or ebay) and the ribbon you can buy at any haberdashery. It's a simple and affordable way to update your old winter coat.
