Day II

corinne_day

I've already proved my love for Corinne Day before. But I've just learned she died and I can't help but pay homage to her with this post. Her pictures defined visually the 90's and only for that reason her work will remain vividly in the social imaginary for ever.

VEJA

veja trainers

I'm not much of a trainer girl, in fact I hardly ever wear them. But I feel drawn to this Veja trainers. The price is good, the design is superb and they're eco-friendly. I picture myself wearing them in a casual way with a pair of high-waisted pleated pants. An excellent alternative to the classic Adidas and Nike.

Gustave Le Gray

gustave le gray
I could devote this post to explaining the reasons why Gustave Le Gray is considered the great innovator in the 19th century photography. But it's Sunday and the mind needs to rest. I merely say that his pictures evoke masterfully the summer evenings that we all be missing in a couple of months. So those who can, please enjoy the last moments of the season as the taste will have to last for a long time.

HAKAAN

hakaan

There's been quite a fuzz about Hakaan since he won the 2010 ANDAM award and not everything said has been good. Many find this success a bit strange being his debut collection; established models such as Lara Stone, Natalia Vodianova or Natasha Poly walked the runway for him and renowned stores around the globe like Harvey Nichols already stock his clothes.

Where does this success come from? Surely there's something dark behind the whole campaign. But controversies aside, Hakaan is talented. He executes his exquisite short dresses in fine materials such as ostrich feathers, wool or leather. The colour palette is simple, in the line of the prevailing minimalism: ivory, nude, gray, navy and black. All in all, this is a cohesive collection that hints at a great future. I only hope Hakaan is more than a promise.

Favoritismos

It's almost ridiculous the degree of attachment I have to certain things. That's why I am going to share the love I feel for them, little by little, in this blog. I'd better not dwell excessively and complete the previous sparse explanation with an example. I'll start with silk shirts a fantastic way to spice up a boring outfit.

Allie Mount

"In the simplest of terms, I photograph landscapes; specifically, the western landscapes where I have grown up and now live. California's hills and deserts, Oregon's coastlines and Columbia River Gorge – these all describe what it means to be from the western United States." That's the way Allie Mount defines her work. And somehow it translates to her pictures, because even though I've never visited that part of the States, everything looks familiar. They make you want to be there, rest and feel good.

LABshop

LABshop
Two weekends ago I was at the LABshop, an independent designer market that took place at the Laboral art center. The support given to this kind of events is highly appreciated, because it helps young designers to find their place in the crowded fashion market. They also favor creative sinergies and an enviable atmosphere of genuine camaraderie.

In adittion to a great range of accesories, you can also find clothes from brands like La Fía de Lola, Mimamantrana or Duermevela's graphic designs. In short, a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

One of my favourite photography books is Camera Work. It compiles part of the work Alfred Stiglitz published in the journal of the same name from 1902 to 1917. Many photographers stand out, however it was Eva Watson-Schütze the one who draw my attention. She was one of the founding members of Photo-Secession, a society that helped photography reach the status of fine art. Her work was deeply influenced by her early interest in painting. The portrait is one of her strenghts and women often played a big part in her pictures. Ultimately, her photographs evoke a time of change that is, to a great extent, unrepeatable.

Daido Moriyama

daido moriyama 2
Daido Moriyama and I were born on the same day 49 years apart. No big deal, but I thought it was a good way to start this post. The thing is I happened upon him by chance and since then he has become the focal point of my obsessions. His unique aesthetic, prevailed by hazy black and white pictures, is a way of a expressing a deeper message. A big part of his work depicts the transformation of the traditional Japanese society since WWII. White collar workers, traders and prostitutes mingle in the narrow streets of Shinjuku, resulting in a unusual contrast a few decades ago.
