Despite all the great names -such as Fortuny, Balenciaga, Manolo Blahník or Paco Rabanne- Spain has given to fashion, there's a general feeling of discomfort. The truth is that the huge support the goverment is giving to the industry eliminates competency.

A pesar de que España ha dado nombres tan grandes a la moda como Fortuny, Cristóbal Balenciaga, Manolo Blahník o Paco Rabanne , en la actualidad hay una sensación general de pesadumbre. Es cierto que el desmesurado apoyo de las instituciones elimina la sana competencia.

Furthermore, the absecence of a flagship school means that the young people with ambition and ideas must leave for Paris, London, New York or Antwerp to never come back.

Además la ausencia de una escuela que ejerza la labor de buque insignia provoca que los jóvenes con ambición e ideas tengan que marcharse a estudiar a París, Londres, New York o Amberes para no volver más.

Nevertheless, I see light at the end of the tunnel. Designers like Josep Font, Txell Mirás or Emilio de la Morena are a safe bet.

To those designers mentioned above I must add the name of Frank Tell, a talented Spaniard who has been showing in New York since September 2007.

A todos esos diseñadores ya mencionados hay que añadir el nombre de Frank Tell, un talentoso español que lleva desfilando en la pasarela neoyorquina desde septiembre de 2007.

With his silky cocktail dresses, Frank has conquered the likes of Julia Restoin-Roitfeld or Pamela Love.

Johnny Thunders was a member of the New York Dolls and therefore one of the most influential people in Punk Rock history, as well as one of the best dressed men - along with Nick Cave- in the music industry.

Johnny Thunders fue miembro de los New York Dolls, y por consiguiente una de las personas más influyentes de la historia del punk. Además es uno de los hombres mejor vestidos -junto con Nick Cave- en la industria de la música.

I really like this statement from The Cheap Date Guide to Style about him :" Johnny Thunders was a kid from Queens in Studio-54 era, anything-goes New York. From boy-scout shirts to Tibetan boots, '40s women's heels to fine tailoring. With a curled lip, he made the slightest detail significant, and magnificent. Mundanity didn't exist in his style, and pictures of him are still magical."

Me gusta mucho éste extracto de The Cheap Date Guide to Style sobre él: "Johnny Thunders era un chico de Queens en la era de Studio 54, y cualquier cosa que se llevase en New York. The beginning of the new year is a great moment to start thinking about what we'll wear next season. Last summer was invaded by jumpsuits, and it seems that we'll see the comeback of the skort in 2009. Yay or nay?

2nd Anniversary

I have just realized two years ago, last sunday I started this blog. It may sound cliche but I wouldn't keep on writing if people didn't comment and read.

Me acabo de dar cuenta de que el domingo se cumplieron dos años desde que empecé a escribir este blog. Podrá parecer un cliché, pero no seguiría abierto de no ser por la gente que lo lee y comenta.

Taking stock of my experience I must be grateful for all the great things Allure-Allure has given me. The best is -without a doubt- being part of a close-knit community in which I have such good friends as Atelier.

Haciendo balance debo agradecer a Allure-Allure por todas las cosas buenas que me ha dado. La mejor -sin duda- es formar parte de una comunidad unida en la que tengo amigos tan buenos como Atelier.

Me and Atelier last October in Madrid.

Along all these two years I've attempted to improve this blog as much as I can, always trying to maintain a level of quality over quantity. Nevertheless, I'm aware I can do more but I need your suggestions.

A lo largo de estos dos años siempre he tratado de mejorar en la medida de lo posible, intentando mantener un nivel de calidad en detrimento de la cantidad. Pero soy consciente de que puede haber muchas más maneras en las que éste blog podría ser mejor (se aceptan sugerencias).

PIXIE MARKET

Now that sales have started on most online shops (I still have to wait for the real life sales) it's time to have a look at all those stores I try to avoid the rest of the year taking into account I'm weak and cannot resist temptation.

Ahora que las rebajas ya han empezado en la mayoría de webs online (todavía tengo que esperar por las de verdad) es hora de echar un vistazo a esas tiendas que trato de evitar el resto del año teniendo en cuenta que soy débil y no puedo evitar caer en la tentación.

One of those shops is the US based Pixie Market. I blame the magnificent styling -I even save their pics in my inspiration folder- for liking everything they stock.

Una de esas tiendas es Pixie Market, con base en Estados Unidos. Yo trato de culpar a los magníficos estilismos -incluso guardo sus fotos como inspiración- porqué me guste todo lo que venden.

However, what I like most is their wide range of outerwear. It's difficult to find such great cuts, original but classic at these good prices.

Pero lo que más me gusta de todo y sin ninguna duda es su amplia gama de abrigos y chaquetas. Es difícil encontrar cortes tan originales y clásicos a la vez, a tan buenos precios.

After party

I hope everyone had a pleasant holiday and got the presents they wanted. I was suppossed to wait until January 6th because is the day we traditionally get our gifts here. But my Iosselliani ring arrived early and I can't wait to wear it!

Espero que todo el mundo haya tenido unas fiestas muy placenteras y haya recibido los regalos que esperaba. Yo -y la mayoría de españolitos- aún tengo que aguantarme hasta el día 6. Aunque he de confesar que he tenido un pequeño adelanto porqué mi anillo de Iosselliani ya ha llegado.

The video -I couldn't find the original- is a small homage to Eartha Kitt who passed away last thursday. Ironically she was best known for her song Santa Baby.

El video - no pude encontrar el original- es un pequeño homenaje a Eartha Kitt que murió el pasado jueves y que ironicamente era conocida por su canción Santa Baby.

Marilyn Monroe

It's been a time since I wanted to write about Marilyn Monroe but I didn't know what to say. The largest auction of photos of the actress in history seems the perfect excuse.

Hace mucho tiempo que quería escribir algo acerca de Marilyn Monroe pero no sabía muy bien como. La mayor subasta de fotografías de la actriz de la historia parece la excusa perfecta.

Most people are incapable of seeing the person behind the myth. The woman who every single day worked to better herself, a woman who -at the top of her career- took acting classes, simply because she didn't wanted to be seen just as a sexual object.

La mayoría de la gente es incapaz de ver a la persona detrás del mito. A la mujer que cada día luchaba por superarse a sí misma, una mujer que -en lo alto de su carrera- tomó clases de interpretación, simplemente porqué no quería que se la viese como un simple objeto sexual.

The picture above appeared in Vogue in 1962 right after her tragic death. Bert Stern captured very well the sorrow overwhelming the actress at the time.

La foto de arriba apareción en Vogue en 1962 justo después de su trágica muerte. Bert Stern supo capturar muy bien la tristeza que invadía a la actriz en aquellos momentos.

Mono

Mono is a Vancouver-based label established in 2005. Heather Martin, who also teaches design and textiles at Vancouver Community college, is the designer behind this project.

Mono es una marca establecida en Vancouver en 2005. Heather Martin, quién también enseña diseño y textiles en la universidad de Vancouver, es el cerebro detrás de éste proyecto.

Mono isn't the typical clothing line. First of all, it doesn't follow the frenetic pace of today's fashion. The intricate handmade fabrics prove the clothes are made to last.

Mono no es la típica marca de ropa. Para empezar, no sigue el ritmo frenético de la moda de hoy en día. Las intrincadas telas confeccionadas a mano demuestran que la ropa está hecha para durar.

Mono is also linked with art: "througout this time mono has grown a dedicated following working in collaboration with select design companies and artists such as Douglas Coupland, Yumi Eto and the Lifetime Collective. Within the most recent collaboration,Clothe/Breathe, mono joined talents with a choreographer and a sound artist to create a performance installation."

Worst buys (I hardly worn any of this things): custom made black skater skirt, American Apparel triblend pullover, round tortoise sunglasses from e-bay and selfmade flower skirt.

Lo peor (porqué no me lo puse casi nunca): falda negra de corte skater hecha a medida, jersey de American Apparel, gafas redondas de e-bay y por último una falda de flores hecha por mi.

Duskin

Duskin es a la moda lo que la navaja de Occam a la lógica; elimina las cosas innecesarias, redundantes que no marcan ninguna diferencia y se queda con la esencia. Es la simplicidad personificada, y ahí reside su belleza.

At what age did you start getting into fashion?

"Coming from a family of 4 daughters, and being the youngest, I got into fashion at a young age. I don't know exactly when it started, but I remember always being very aware of clothing, even throwing tantrums in order to convince my mother to take me shopping. "

¿A qué edad comenzaste a interesarte por la moda?

"Teniendo en cuenta que soy la menor de cuatro hermanas, comencé a interesarme por la moda pronto. No se exactamente cuando empezó, pero recuerdo que siempre he sido muy consciente de la ropa, incluso he tenido rabietas para convencer a mi madre de que me llevase a comprar."

What drived you to launch your own label?

"I moved to Los Angeles for a year and decided that I wanted to come back to New York sooner rather than later. It just felt like the right time to test the waters and venture out on my own. "

¿Qué te llevo a fundar tu propia marca?

Me mudé a Los Angeles durante un año y decidí que tenía que volver a Nueva York más pronto que tarde. Parecía el momento adecuado para tantear y aventurarme a trabajar por mi cuenta."

What was the moodboard for the s/s 09? what kind of things inspire you normally?

"Overall, I am inspired by so much, it's hard to really list. It can be anything from the color of a car, to the color of my tea, to the shape of an old garment...it's really everywhere.

The moodboard for S/S 09 was basically just my color palette- I knew what colors I wanted to represent, and the rest of the design kind of happened organically.

I design for myself- things that I want to wear, things that I feel are missing in the market- and my first season really reflects that. I wanted simple pieces that were also really pretty and versatile...things with special details, but aren't obvious.

Fall inspiration is happening differently...now I'm working more with images and shapes that evoke what I'm feeling now- dark, romance..."

¿Cuál fue el moodboard para la primavera/verano 09? ¿Qué tipo de cosas te inspiran normalmente?

"Es difícil de decir porqué me inspiran muchas cosas. Puede ser cualquier cosa: desde el color de un coche, el color de mi té, la silueta de una prenda vieja ... está en todas partes.

El moodboard para la primavera verano 09 fue básicamente mi paleta de color - sabía que colores quería representar- y el resto surgió de forma orgánica.

Diseño para mi misma -cosas que quiero ponerme, o que hecho de menos en el mercado- y mi primera temporada refleja eso. Quería prendas simples, pero bonitas y versátiles...cosas con detalles especiales, pero no muy obvios.

La inspiración para el invierno está siendo distinta...ahora estoy trabajando con más imágenes y formas que evocan lo que siento ahora mismo - oscuridad, romanticismo..."

Which garment are you most proud of?

"I'm most proud of my Tuxedo Blazer made of silk charmeuse and just the absolute, most sexiest thing I've ever worn. "

"Estoy muy orgullosa de mi chaqueta de Smoking hecha de crepe. Es la cosa más sexy que me he puesto jamás."

What type of woman would you like to see wearing Duskin?

"Anyone who isn't afraid to mix and match, doesn't need a full look, and has confidence in their own style."

¿Qué tipo de mujer te gustaría ver llevando Duskin?

"Cualquiera que no tenga miedo de mezclar, que no necesite un total look, y tenga confianza en su propio estilo."

Madame Rivière

It never ceases to amaze the timelessness of this picture. That said I confess I am being parcial, Madame Rivière is one of my favourite portraits.

Nunca deja de sorprenderme la intemporalidad de este cuadro. Dicho esto, confieso que estoy siendo parcial porqué Madame Rivière es uno de mis retratos favoritos.

Rationalizing

Those of you who read this blog on a daily basis might remember my long love affair with pea coats. The thing is I found my dream pea coat on e-bay, it's super cheap but believe it or not I won't buy it. The coat is heavy, therefore the shipping is $100 for Spain and I'm not that crazy. Anyone, who is interested here is the link to the e-bay auction.

Aquellos que seaís asiduos lectores de este blog sabreís de mi largo affair con los abrigos de inspiración marinera. El caso es que he encontrado uno que es perfecto, muy barato y lo creaís o no, no me lo voy a comprar. El abrigo pesa mucho, los gastos de envío ascienden a $100 y yo no estoy tan colgada.
