Eva Watson-Schütze

One of my favourite photography books is Camera Work. It compiles part of the work Alfred Stiglitz published in the journal of the same name from 1902 to 1917. Many photographers stand out, however it was Eva Watson-Schütze the one who draw my attention. She was one of the founding members of Photo-Secession, a society that helped photography reach the status of fine art. Her work was deeply influenced by her early interest in painting. The portrait is one of her strenghts and women often played a big part in her pictures. Ultimately, her photographs evoke a time of change that is, to a great extent, unrepeatable.

Uno de mis libros de fotografía favoritos es Camera Work. En él se compilan parte de los trabajos que Alfred Stiglitz publicó en la revista del mismo nombre de 1902 a 1917. Destacan muchos nombres, pero llama especialmente mi atención el de Eva Watson-Schütze. Ella fue uno de los miembros fundadores de Photo-Secession, una sociedad de principios del siglo XX que ayudó a que la fotografía alcanzase el estatus de arte. De su obra, podemos decir que estuvo profundamente marcada por el pasado pictórico de la artista. El retrato constituye uno de sus puntos fuertes, siendo la mujer la protagonista en muchas ocasiones. En definitiva, sus fotografías evocan un tiempo de cambios que es, en gran medida, irrepetible.
