D&G vs. Spanish fashion

Weeks ago, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana removed their publicity from the Spanish press. Everything started with a polemic pic in which a half naked man holds a woman lying on the floor. In a country where violence against women is a big problem (68 died last year), the photograph turned into a subject of controversy. Several women's associations interpreted it as a rape scene. They claimed the advert uses violence as a form of submission, and reduces women to a mere sexual object.

The designers reacted saying that Spain had fell behind and declaring Spanish fashion is shit.

I don't think Spanish fashion is neither special nor original . But it is not shit.

Check it yourself.

I think that ad is offensive. I don't understand why FASHION (=clothes) needs to be marketed like that...

very interesting and good post indeed! Also KingdomOfStyle.typepad.co.uk has posted about some very interesting spanish designers and I liked them all.

Regarding the advertising there has always been the trend using sex, sexuality and provoking images to draw attention to the product. It must work thus they do. However, for a country where aggressions against women is an issue I can understand the controversy it may evoke. I generally would say that people should not care too much about ads because mostly neither does the consumer (at least consciously), on the other hand this sort of advertising surely is needless and sometimes ads can go too far. In this case I would not have thought much about but with this background it is surely justified to take this measure and take back the ads.

I hate that ad, I think it's disgusting i'm not easily offended but what other message were they trying to convey besides raping a female why others looked on?

yes it's a shame about spanish fashion.

I don't really like that ad, it can give out the wrong massage. About Spanish fashion, I agree, it is not special or original, but I like it.

I was sort of kinda shocked for this ad ,though I love their ads normally . I don't think spanish fashion shit just because of this incident.

teir opinion about spanish fashion has nothing to do with the way tha they have selected to promote their work. they should at least show some respect.

I think fashion should always be forward-thinking, and challenge our complacent cultural and social norms. However, when fashion adverts reiterate the sexist practices of society and of capitalism, I think it shows itself to be irresponsible. This advert is rubbish. It in no ways exemplifies any of my fashion desires, dreams or fantasies. But instead, merely makes a mockery of women.

Great post!

That Dolce ad is disturbing. Is it me or do they D&G seem to be going the way of Tom Ford for Gucci in some of their ads lately.
