The best and the worst.

The year is coming to an end and I thought it would be a great idea to do a post about my best/worst buys of 2008. I encourage you to do the same and publish them in your blog -if you have one- or if you prefer it you can send them to me at silkandlame@hotmail.com and I'll publish them.

Best buys: Charles Anastase dress, Ferragamo Vara shoes, Superfine black skinnies (best fit ever!), H&M perfecto, red silk scarf from Etsy.

Lo mejor: vestido de Charles Anastase, zapatos Vara de Ferragamo, pitillos Superfine, perfecto de H&M y pañuelo rojo de seda de Etsy.

Worst buys (I hardly worn any of this things): custom made black skater skirt, American Apparel triblend pullover, round tortoise sunglasses from e-bay and selfmade flower skirt.

Lo peor (porqué no me lo puse casi nunca): falda negra de corte skater hecha a medida, jersey de American Apparel, gafas redondas de e-bay y por último una falda de flores hecha por mi.

Duskin

At what age did you start getting into fashion?

"Coming from a family of 4 daughters, and being the youngest, I got into fashion at a young age. I don't know exactly when it started, but I remember always being very aware of clothing, even throwing tantrums in order to convince my mother to take me shopping. "

¿A qué edad comenzaste a interesarte por la moda?

"Teniendo en cuenta que soy la menor de cuatro hermanas, comencé a interesarme por la moda pronto. No se exactamente cuando empezó, pero recuerdo que siempre he sido muy consciente de la ropa, incluso he tenido rabietas para convencer a mi madre de que me llevase a comprar."

What drived you to launch your own label?

"I moved to Los Angeles for a year and decided that I wanted to come back to New York sooner rather than later. It just felt like the right time to test the waters and venture out on my own. "

¿Qué te llevo a fundar tu propia marca?

Me mudé a Los Angeles durante un año y decidí que tenía que volver a Nueva York más pronto que tarde. Parecía el momento adecuado para tantear y aventurarme a trabajar por mi cuenta."

What was the moodboard for the s/s 09? what kind of things inspire you normally?

"Overall, I am inspired by so much, it's hard to really list. It can be anything from the color of a car, to the color of my tea, to the shape of an old garment...it's really everywhere.

The moodboard for S/S 09 was basically just my color palette- I knew what colors I wanted to represent, and the rest of the design kind of happened organically.

I design for myself- things that I want to wear, things that I feel are missing in the market- and my first season really reflects that. I wanted simple pieces that were also really pretty and versatile...things with special details, but aren't obvious.

Fall inspiration is happening differently...now I'm working more with images and shapes that evoke what I'm feeling now- dark, romance..."

¿Cuál fue el moodboard para la primavera/verano 09? ¿Qué tipo de cosas te inspiran normalmente?

"Es difícil de decir porqué me inspiran muchas cosas. Puede ser cualquier cosa: desde el color de un coche, el color de mi té, la silueta de una prenda vieja ... está en todas partes.

El moodboard para la primavera verano 09 fue básicamente mi paleta de color - sabía que colores quería representar- y el resto surgió de forma orgánica.

Diseño para mi misma -cosas que quiero ponerme, o que hecho de menos en el mercado- y mi primera temporada refleja eso. Quería prendas simples, pero bonitas y versátiles...cosas con detalles especiales, pero no muy obvios.

La inspiración para el invierno está siendo distinta...ahora estoy trabajando con más imágenes y formas que evocan lo que siento ahora mismo - oscuridad, romanticismo..."

Which garment are you most proud of?

"I'm most proud of my Tuxedo Blazer made of silk charmeuse and just the absolute, most sexiest thing I've ever worn. "

¿De qué prenda te sientes más orgullosa?

"Estoy muy orgullosa de mi chaqueta de Smoking hecha de crepe. Es la cosa más sexy que me he puesto jamás."

What type of woman would you like to see wearing Duskin?

"Anyone who isn't afraid to mix and match, doesn't need a full look, and has confidence in their own style."

¿Qué tipo de mujer te gustaría ver llevando Duskin?

"Cualquiera que no tenga miedo de mezclar, que no necesite un total look, y tenga confianza en su propio estilo."

It never ceases to amaze the timelessness of this picture. That said I confess I am being parcial, Madame Rivière is one of my favourite portraits.

Nunca deja de sorprenderme la intemporalidad de este cuadro. Dicho esto, confieso que estoy siendo parcial porqué Madame Rivière es uno de mis retratos favoritos.

Rationalizing

Those of you who read this blog on a daily basis might remember my long love affair with pea coats. The thing is I found my dream pea coat on e-bay, it's super cheap but believe it or not I won't buy it. The coat is heavy, therefore the shipping is $100 for Spain and I'm not that crazy. Anyone, who is interested here is the link to the e-bay auction.

Aquellos que seaís asiduos lectores de este blog sabreís de mi largo affair con los abrigos de inspiración marinera. El caso es que he encontrado uno que es perfecto, muy barato y lo creaís o no, no me lo voy a comprar. El abrigo pesa mucho, los gastos de envío ascienden a $100 y yo no estoy tan colgada. Bows & Bandits

The net is overflowed with shops therefore, it gets more and more difficult to be different from the rest. For me is a matter of charm and putting so much of your personality on it.

La red de redes está plagada de tiendas, y diferenciarse del resto es cada vez más difícil. Para mi es una cuestión de encanto y de poner mucho de tu personalidad.

That's why I felt so glad when Eva and Sophie introduced me their shop Bows & Bandits. You can literally feel how much love and work they have put in this project and that has so much value in this dehumanized virtual world.

Por eso cuando Eva y Sophie me contactaron para darme a conocer su tienda Bows & Bandits me alegré mucho. Uno puede percibir perfectamente cuanto amor y trabajo han puesto en éste proyecto y es de agradecer en un mundo virtual y deshumanizado.

I'm all for basics right now like this white shirt

Ahora mismo el cuerpo solo me pide básicos como ésta camisa blanca.

I don't know about you, but I came to realize that I shop cyclically. Sometimes I only buy basics, some other times I act on impulse and totally follow trends, or I save money and invest in an expensive piece or I simply don't buy anything. I'd love to find balance.

No se si a vosotros os pasará también pero yo me doy cuenta de que tengo ciclos en lo que a compras se refiere. A veces me da por comprar solo básicos, otras actúo por impulsos siguiendo las modas, o ahorro y lo invierto en una prenda cara o simplemente me da por no comprar. Me gustaría ser capaz de encontrar un equilibrio.

SPON DIOGO

Mia Lisa Spon and Rui Andersen Rodrigues Diogo form the design team behind the -Copenhagen-based label SPON DIOGO. She studied fashion and is an experienced tailor, while he -among other things- run a gallery in Reykjavík or worked as arts director in a Danish fashion magazine.

Mia Lisa Spon y Rui Andersen Rodrigues Diogo son los componentes del dúo creativo detrás de la marca SPON DIOGO con sede en Copenhage. Ella es la que ha recibido una formación académica en el campo del diseño conviertiéndose en una experta patronista, mientras que él -entre otras cosas- ha regentado una galería de arte en Reykjavík, o ha trabajado como director artístico en una revista de moda danesa.

Their first work is a pre-collection to their spring-summer collection: "Facets", consisting on 10 pieces exclusively made for the Danish store Paris-Texas.

Su primer trabajo es una pre-colección de 10 piezas -adelanto a su primera colección que debutará en la próxima temporada primavera/verano- hechas exclusivamente para la tienda Paris-Texas.

I very much agree with their own brand's definition : "the SPON DIOGO label emanates powerful and sensually luxurious, elegant women's wear- explorative in both cut and design. Their signature is attention to shape and silhouette, detail, use of the ultimate in fabrics and perction of cut. Luxurious silksand wools are expertly used to emphasize the female shape."

Estoy muy de acuerdo con su propia definición de la marca: " SPON DIOGO emana fortaleza, lujo, sensualidad, y elegancia- investiga tanto en corte como en diseño. Su seña de identidad es la atención prestada a la forma y la silueta, el detalle, el uso de las más innovadoras telas y su perfección en el corte. Lujosas lanas mezcladas con seda son usadas para enfatizar la figura femenina."

It's been a while since I've been seen many women wearing metallic garments, so typical of night life, during daytime.

De un tiempo a esta parte he venido observando como muchas mujeres sacan del armario sus prendas metálicas, típicas de la noche, para adaptarlas a sus conjuntos de día.

The most daring girls go for paillettes jackets, while others like Anouck Lepere give an edgy touch to a simple outfit with gold sandals.

Las más atrevidas apuestan por chaquetas de paillettes, mientras que otras como Anouck Lepere dan un toque distinto a un look, en principio sencillo, con unas sandalias doradas.

Last Frankie Ryder and Alexa Chung wearing the same shiny skirt but in very different ways. I thought it was from American Apparel, but I had a look at the site, and I could not find it. Any help would be appreciated.

I must be the last person in the whole blogosphere to know that the most prestigious shoe-makers in the world have reinterpreted the ruby slippers Judy Garland wore in the Wizard of Oz. To conmemorate the musical's 70th anniversary, established designers like Christian Louboutin, Manolo Blahník or Sergio Rossi have collaborated to pay a well deserved homage to this magnificent film. I confess: my favourites are the Moschino's!

Debo de ser la última persona en la blogosfera en enterarse de que los más prestigiosos zapateros del mundo han reinterpretado los clásicos chapines de rubíes que Judy Garland lucía en el Mago de Oz. Con motivo del 70 aniversario del musical, genios de la talla de Christian Louboutin, Manolo Blahník o Sergio Rossi han colaborado para realizar un merecido homenaje a ésta magnífica obra del cine. Confieso: ¡mis favoritos son los de Moschino!

Michael Oats

Some time ago Miguel left his home town, Almería and went to Málaga to study a degree in Audiovisual Communication. This 20-year-old has already a clear aesthetic sense which is inspired -in his own words- by Vogue.

Hace un tiempo, Miguel dejó su Almería natal para marcharse a Málaga a estudiar Comunicación Audiovisual. Con tan solo 20 años, ya tiene un sentido de la estética muy claro que según sus propias palabras está inspirado en los editoriales de Vogue.

His main reference is Steve Klein through whom he discovered and became interested in fashion photography. He also likes the work of Steve Meisel "overall the phase where he mixed everyday situations with haute couture (Glamorama, Live on the web, etc...)".

Su principal referente es Steve Klein, a través del cual descubrió y se aficionó a la fotografía de moda. Otro de sus fotógrafos de cabecera es Steve Meisel "sobretodo la etapa en la que mezclaba las acciones de la vida cotidiana con alta costura (Glamorama, Live on the web, etc...)".

I predict him a long career, and I only hope his dream of publishing in Vogue will come true someday.

Le auguró una carrera larga, y solo espero que su deseo de publicar en Vogue se cumpla algún día.

This winter we're moving from the classical feminity towards the darkness of the male wardrobe. I'm not complaining, I love this trend and I always will. But I am pretty sure by the time good weather arrives, we'll be more inclined to wear lighter and cheerful colours.

Parece que este invierno nos estemos alejando más y más de la feminidad para adentrarnos en el oscurantismo del guardaropa masculino. No es que me queje, ni mucho menos, porqué es una tendencia que me encanta. Pero seguramente para cuando llegue el buen tiempo nos apetecerá ponernos colores más claros y alegres.

Personally, when this moment arrives I'll be relying on the Switzerland*-based designer Aleksandra Wisniewska. She proposes silk dresses and blouses in old rose paired with paperbag waisted trousers. The whole collection is very chic, wearable and highly recommended for those women who have to do the difficult transition from day to night without stop.

Personalmente, cuando llegue ese momento voy a tener muy en cuenta a la diseñadora suiza Aleksandra Wisniewska. Ella nos propone vestidos y blusones de seda en tonos maquillaje, combinados con pantalones harén de cintura alta. La colección al completo es muy chic, ponible, y está altamente recomendada para todas aquellas mujeres que tengan que hacer la difícil transición del día a la noche sin pasar por casa.

I've always been obsessed with finding the perfect t-shirt. I've tried tons of different labels from H&M, to Mark & Estel or Alternative Apparel. But for one reason or another, none of them meet my expectations.

Desde siempre he tenido una obsesión por buscar la camiseta perfecta. He probado con muchas marcas; desde H&M, hasta Mark&Estel o Alternative Apparel. Pero por una razón u otra, ninguna cumple mis expectativas.

They say The Row makes the perfect t-shirt. But, truth to be told there are better things out there to spend $300 on than a t-shirt.

Dicen que The Row hace la camiseta perfecta. Pero la verdad, hay cosas mejores en las que gastarse 300 dólares que una camiseta.

Even though I have neither touched nor seen KAiN t-shirts in real life, they might be close to my concept of perfection. They are made of 90% modal ,10% silk and have a small pocket that drives me crazy!

Aunque no he ni visto ni tocado las camisetas KAiN en la vida real, puede que se acerquen bastante a mi concepto de perfección. Se componen de modal (un tejido hecho a partir de la celulosa) en un 90% y el 10% restante es seda. Además, ¡tienen un bolsito que me vuelve loca!

"The project "Anyone but me, anywhere but here" has been built on the relationship and the sometimes disloyal exchange between past and present. Both I myself as a curator and themselves as artists and designers share the same fascination for objects, the propensity towards reason and connections as well as the motivation to always create new situations and change the natural order of things.

Old photographs depicting moments of vulnerability and social alienation, colonialist furniture lying at the frontiers of reality, the lost world and the aborted mission of a reified system or the conceptual drawings of a designer who daily goes beyond the limits of the human body build the alternative history of a world which no longer belongs to us. The absolute clothing, the utmost protection - Olah Gyarfas's measurement – is the only thing left to synthesize light in the search of the lost soul or the perfect shape.

Jeans Dilemma: to buy or not to buy

Four or five years ago, I was a blue jeans girl. I hardly ever wore anything else apart from jeans. Consequently, I grew tired of them and I never wear jeans today. However, lately I feel in need of a new pair.

Hace cuatro o cinco años, podría decirse que apenas me ponía nada que no fuesen vaqueros. De ahí que me hartase tanto de ellos hasta el punto de que hoy en día nunca me los pongo. Sin embargo, últimamente siento la necesidad -y también el deseo- de comprarme un nuevo par.

I really like the model Hex from Acne. It has normal waist and narrow leg, which is the most flattering silhouette for my body. But as I am not sure of how much use I'll get out of them, I don't feel like spending 200€.

Me encanta el modelo Hex de Acne. La cintura cae justo debajo del ombligo y la pierna es recta, la cual es una de las siluetas que mejor sientan a mi cuerpo. Pero no me apetece gastarme 200€ en un par de pantalones que no se si me voy a poner mucho.

Should I buy them? (I still have the Cheap Monday option...)
