Girls with Allure: Rhiannon Leifheit

rhiannon 12

Define your style
I would say that my style is romantic and vintage-based.  I love to wear vintage, but I keep getting into new labels that make clothes that remind me of the past, and that have a way of making vintage-based clothes that look modern at the same time.  I try to wear whatever works the best for me; as much as I love crisp, tailored menswear styles on women I just can't pull them off myself, so for me it's usually clothes with soft lines. Also lots of dresses.

Girls with Allure:Chouchou

chouchou

Define your style.
I would like to define my style as minimalistic and simple. I love plain and clean items of clothing.

When and why did you become interested in fashion?
I think it started in a very unconscious way when I was a little girl. My love for clothes and fashion only grew and grew with the years.

Girls with Allure: La Mignonette

mignonette girls with allure
Define your style.
I would like to define my style as a mixture between discrete rock n’ roll tomboy meets 1960s easy chic.
When and why did you become interested in fashion?
My mother was definitely a big influence: she used to buy a lot of fashion magazines back when I was little and she always wore cool, beautiful clothes. Ever since I was a little girl, I had a big interest in fashion.
mignonette girls with allure 4
Who/what influences your style the most?
Obscure 1960s garage rock bands, ye-ye girls (like singer Françoise Hardy or actresses such as Anna Karina and Mia Farrow), 1960s simplicity and minimalism, Sofia Coppola’s quiet imagery, French movies, Mick Jagger circa 1967, romantic movies like “Picnic at the Hanging Rock”, French  easy chic, architecture, movies, fashion magazines, books, and people on the street. Almost anything can supply a source of inspiration if we take a close look at it, but rock’n’roll ‘s visual culture is always a good supply of inspiration.
mignonette girls with allure 5
You'd never be caught in...
American Apparel latex leggings, loud colors, über sexy clothes and bad fabrics like polyester.
You can't live without... Perfume. And a nice face cream.
Your passion is...  Definitely fashion.
mignonette girls with allure 2
Which is, in your opinion, the best piece of clothing ever designed?
I believe Yves Saint Laurent take on tuxedo -Le Smoking-, marked a moment in fashion history when it comes to contemporary/utilitarian women’s wear design: it’s functional, sexy, timeless and chic.
Who are your favorite designers?
Phoebe Philo, Marc Jacobs, Isabel Marant, A.P.C., Chloé, Charles Anastase, Sonia Rykiel, Margaret Howell, Dries van Noten, Jil Sander, Joseph, Proenza Schouler (and Luella was pretty good too).
mignonette10
A book, a film and a song.
A book…"Christian Dior" by Françoise Giroud
A film…”Marie Antoinette”. Because it’s a visual treat. And because after its release, girls all over were wearing pink rosy cheeks like the Dauphine herself!
A song…The Rolling Stones "Sympathy for the devil"
mignonette girls with allure 3
What are your wardrobe staples?
An Isabel Marant blazer, black Repetto flats, black ankle boots, skinny black jeans, black opaque tights.
mignonette girls with allure 6
A fetish
Currently vintage shoes, especially strappy ones; I’ve been looking for them on Etsy and on Ebay.
What does style means to you?
This question is quite deep and interesting if we take time to analyze it. Style represents a huge part of life: it’s a way to communicate with the outer world without resorting to words. It involves a process of combining all your influences and references (aesthetic, visual, artistic, musical, etc.) into one single mutable entity, resorting to clothes and accessories as elements of communication.

Girls with Allure: Mode d'amour

mode-damour 3

Define your style. I find that a difficult question. I used to wear a lot of black, but lately I wear different soft colors. I would say that my style is basic, easy, and unpredictable.

When and why did you become interested in fashion? I became interested in fashion when i was 13 years old. I've always loved clothes, but i started to get more interested in fashion and designers at that time.

Who/what influences your style the most? There's not just one thing, I love to watch fashion shows, people on the street, magazines, movies, fashion from the 70's and 80's, the internet is a big inspitition, vintage shops, and so much more! and there are some people who inspire me like Mary-Kate Olsen, Kate Moss and I love Abbey Lee's style lately!

mode-damour 2
You'd never be caught in... bright colors! i do wear more colors lately than before, i used to wear lots of black, but i do wear some nude and brown tones now.

You can't live without... my dog, animals are my other passion.

Girls with Allure: Cecilie

Cecilie is 18 and lives in Copenhagen where she works for APC. Her style is very feminine and colourful, and as she states "pretty classic and simple, I almost never wear prints."

cecilie4

1.-When and why did you become interested in fashion?

I have always done a lot of drawing and painting and I guess my "interest in fashion" started when I was about ten years old and started "designing" clothes with my friend. I still have all the sketches and considering our age we actually did some pretty cool stuff.

2.-Who/what influences your style the most?

Movies for sure. I have a few which I watch quite often just because of all the beautiful clothes! Otherwise just people in general, often musicians.

cecilie3

3.-You'd never be caught in...

Alexander Wang. He makes beautiful clothes but it just doesn't fit my personality or bodytype.

3.-Nunca te pondrías...

Alexander Wang.

4.-You can't live without...

Cotton, silk and cashmere. I never ever wear synthetic materials!

4.-No puedes vivir sin...

Algodón, seda y cashmere. ¡Nunca llevo materiales sintéticos!

5.-Your passion is...

Coats, blazer and jackets!

5.-Tu pasión son...

Los abrigos, las americanas y las chaquetas!

cecilie2

6.-Which is, in your opinion, the best piece of clothing ever designed?

Striped shirts.

7.-Who are your favorite designers?

The ones I dream of wearing: Chloé, Sonia Rykiel, Marc Jacobs. The ones I can afford wearing: APC (Jean Touitou), Filippa K, Margaret Howell.

cecilie

8.-A book, a film and a song.

Book: The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera. It's not my favorite but I always think of thousands of different outfits for Teresa (one of the main characters) to wear while reading. I just cant help it.

Film: Annie Hall. I saw it last night... Again! Diane Keaton is absolutely stunning.

Song: Luka by Suzanne Vega. Suzanne Vega was a very important part of my teenage years and I remember seeing the music video when I was 13 and suddenly feeling like wearing hats and high wasted pants. So I did.

No puedo evitarlo.

9.-What are your wardrobe staples?

Striped shirts and skirts. And a nice pair of black brogues.

10.-What does style means to you?

I think there is like two ways to look at style and fashion in general : as an art-form or as craftsmanship.

I think you should always try to think of it as both whether you're designing, writing about fashion, shopping or just trying to put together and outfit in front of the mirror in the morning.

I mean, you can wear or design the most beautiful dress in the world but if it is not well made or in good materials it will just look terrible.

Girls with Allure: Madelene

For this new issue of Girls with Allure I had the pleasure to interview Madelene of Le Portillon, whose style and words I've admired since I started reading her old blog in 2006. I hope you enjoy and learn from this interview as much as I did.

Define your style.
Simple, eclectic, dreamy and all through a manifest of my persona.

madelene

You'd never be caught in...
Anything that isn't 'me': I detest feeling like I'm not entirely being myself, or not loyal to my own style and sensibilities.

You can't live without...
My special pharmacy lipbalm, only available in Sweden. I panic a little if I forget it.

Your passion is...
Writing. I've always had a soft spot for words, composing and creating.

Which is, in your opinion, the best piece of clothing ever designed?
Whoever came up with the black wool coat (think doublebreasted, kneelength and supersoft) was a fashion genius.

madelene2

Who are your favorite designer(s)?
Alber Elbaz, Charles Anastase, Karen Walker, Yves Saint Laurent, Vanessa Bruno, among others.

A book, a film and a song.
'Lolita' by Nabokov for the most beautiful use of language; 'Une Femme est Une Femme' by Godard because it never fails to make me smile; 'It seems so long ago Nancy' by Leonard Cohen because I find his voice comforting, lyrics divine.

madelene4

What are your wardrobe staples?
Repetto flats, opaque Wolford tights, cashmere pullovers en masse, silk dresses, Superfine jeans and well-cut wool coats with all kinds of quirky details.

A fetish.
Edwardian era dresses and blouses. The handmade details found in these pieces are stunning and incomparable to most present day clothing. They have great personality.

madelene3

Name three of your favourite beauty products.
Elizabeth Arden's Eight hour cream, I use a tiny bit on my lips instead of lipgloss; Neutrogena's night cream does wonders for my face; Chanel's poudre universelle libre has been my powder of choice for years.

What kind of things inspire you while getting dressed?
Most of my inspiration to dress is the result of me being an avid daydreamer, with a lively fantasy and an undying love for beauty.

What does style mean to you?
Style to me is a compulsive part of life, inescapable but it should only ever come naturally; when it is forced it loses all importance. Style is as essential to pleasure as any good book, song or lover. It is intelligent and completely enthralling.

Girls with Allure: Ashleigh

I would like to continue showing you my love for the always stylish Austrialians featuring Ashleigh in Girls with Allure.

ashleigh

Define your style. Part girl and part modern grunge. I definitely get a lot of inspiration from current trends and look books but I also revisit my older pieces to revamp them and I’m definitely an op shop girl.

You'd never be caught in... clothes with labels plastered across them. I just can’t do it.

What would you wear to a big night out? Something black for sure, it’s always the safe option. My last big night was in Brunswick and I wore an American Apparel U-Neck dress and my customized Rubi stud boots. So always something along those lines, it’s still quite grungy and definitely not too girly but a bit neater.

You can't live without... culture. Melbourne has so much of it and I am learning so much about the world through this beautiful city. So really, I probably couldn’t live without Melbourne.

ashleigh

What can we find in your bag right now? I have been changing bags a lot but lately I’m holding onto this hippy type sling sack bag and you’d definitely find my planner, Lucas’ Papaw Ointment (this stuff can be used for anything!), my iPod, my camera, my semi-wallet (I’m too lazy to go and buy myself a new real wallet so instead I just used a coin pouch), a magazine (currently Yen) and lots of bobby pins, rings, necklaces and bracelets.

Your passion is... fashion, writing, food and wine and music.

Which is, in your opinion, the best piece of clothing ever designed? The classic tuxedo suit created by YSL in 1966. This kick started the whole masculine-feminine look that has lead the way to not only my wardrobe choices but a whole new view on women’s fashion. It’s as much as what the piece says to the world as it is what it looks like.

Who are your favorite designers? Claude Maus, Zambesi, Chloe, Ellery, Alexander Wang, Proenza Schouler.

A book, a film and a song. To Kill a Mockingbird, Blow and I Will Possess Your Heart (Death Cab for Cutie)

What are your wardrobe staples? A white tshirt and a great pair of flats such as my oxfords.

ashleigh

A fetish leather, gosh I am so in love with all things leather, oh and studs, so studs too.

What kind of things inspire you while getting dressed? I have a separate rack in my room which holds all my clothes which are currently begging to be worn. But before that, the rack is built up from magazines, music, art and my city itself.

Name three of your favourite beauty products. Aesop Rejuvinate Body Balm, Napoleon Pro Palette Concealer and Lucas’ Papaw Ointment.

What does style means to you? Style to me is another form of self expression it’s like art or music. It’s an outlet that helps us to channel all of our inspirations and current philosophies into one ensemble. It is fun and it is beautiful.

Girls with Allure: the search for chic

I discovered the-search-for-chic just a couple of weeks ago, but it was love at first sight. I spent a good time looking at her archive and I instantly realised two things: we share an obsession for black clothes, and if I could I would raid her closet.

Define your style. I don't like to put my style in a box, but if I were to I would say classic minimalism with an edge.

Define tu estilo.

girlswithallure

You'd never be caught in... Clothing that is sexy in an obvious/tacky way.

What would you wear to a big night out? My Pierre Hardy black patent/wood heels and a black silk dress which I love from Topshop Boutique, the edges are left raw and have frayed..it's really fantastic. I would finish off the look by smokey eyes and throw in my lambskin Chanel bag, just the right mix of edge/classic which I love. And a good scent ...

You can't live without... My Ray Ban wayfarers, I find they bring a certain nonchalance to all-black looks.

What can we find in your bag right now? My Ipod, a black notebook, my mobile, gum, bottega wallet, oyster card, keys, receipts, lypsyl original, Vaseline.

girlswithallure2

Your passion is... good food, good wine...the good things in life.

Which is, in your opinion, the best piece of clothing ever designed? The little black dress, it's an empty canvas.

Who are your favorite designers? I have tremendous respect for Azzedine Alaïa, also I love the early Helmut Lang, and Riccardo Tisci.

A book, a film and a song. Pi— Faith in Chaos, Royksopp-only this moment, Distinction-Pierre Bourdieu.

Un libro, una película y una canción. Pi-Faith in Chaos, Royksopp-Only this moment, Distinction-Pierre Bourdieu.

What we'll be wearing next winter? I predict everyone will be wearing the 'Balmain look'

A fetish My gold 'thorn' ring from Conroy & Wilcox it's perfect!

girlswithallure3

What kind of things inspire you while getting dressed? My mood, it has to feel 'right'.

Name three of your favourite beauty products. Touche Eclat by Yves saint Laurent, REN revivo-lift riant day serum and Lancome Virtuose mascara.

What does style means to you? Style is an aura, it can't be pinned down, it's a product of who you are..where you have been and what you have seen.My favourite quote is 'style is the perfection of a point of view' by Richard Eberhart, he sums it up pretty well.

Girls with Allure illustrated

Badaude and I recently teamed up to do a very special edition of Girls with Allure illustrated. Well, actually she did most of the work while I only asked the questions. Anyhow, here is the final result.

Poor Lola - April March

Girls with Allure: Karla

Karla is probably one of the most stylish 18-year-old you've ever seen. One can tell for the way she dresses she lives in California. In the present she is studying apparel manufacturing at FIDM, and spends the rest of her time with her other passion: music -she actually sings and composes her own songs-

Who's your favourite designer?

"My all-time favorite designer is Yves Saint Laurent. He had a brilliant way of having his women exude sexiness in such an androgynous clothes. I also really love Balenciaga, Martin Margiela, and Stella McCartney."

A fetish...

"Oh wow, I definitely have a major shoe fetish. I’d actually rather wear shoes than clothes."

What was your latest purchase? What are you planning to buy next?

"Hmm, my latest purchase were a pair of schoolboy trousers from Target. Planning to wear them with sky-scraping platforms, sheer tanks, and vintage tees. Next on the list of things to buy: white lingerie, an electric purple American Apparel skirt, and men’s skinny ties."

You'd never be caught in...

"True Religions and Juicy Couture tracksuits."

What is in your opinion the best piece of clothing ever invented?

"The black blazer."

A book, a film and a song...

"Favorite book of all time: Go Ask Alice. My favorite films are basically all the Audrey Hepburn classics. I’m a sucker for romantic movies too!"

What kind of things inspire you when getting dressed?

"Well it varies from day to day. Some days I’ll pick something in my closet like simple white tee or pair of high-waisted trousers and put my look together based on that particular piece. Other days I’ll just put on whatever is hanging on the back of my door. "

You can't live without...

"Blazers and strawberry lip balm."

What does style mean to you?

"Style is all about confidence. It’s not even about what you wear, it’s the way you wear it (oh wow, that sounded absolutely cheesy)."

L.A. woman - The Doors

Girls with Allure: Rumi

Rumi and her west coast signature style deserve to be featured in Girls with Allure. This twenty-four years old, lives in California and has an understandable obsession for Balenciaga bags.

Define your style.
"Melanie Huynh reading Lula on the beach, listening to the Velvet Underground. I wish. "

I would never be caught in...
"Overly whiskered jeans. "

A book, a film, and a song.

"Franny and Zooey, The Last Days of Disco, Girl in a Coma - Their Cell. "
Who is your favourite designer?

"Karl Lagerfeld. "

What's in your bag?

"Razr, Bluetooth, iPod Touch, Netflix giftcard, vintage Sunnies in heart print Forever21 case, makeup bag, Nars lip gloss in Turkish Delight, Rimmel cream eyeshadow, ivory studded wallet, keys with Tokidoki keychain, post office receipt, hand sanitizer, Bliss hand cream, American Apparel catalog, leather gloves, Sony Cybershot camera, Dauphine Press mini-notebook. "

A fetish

"I am eternally obsessed with tights and socks, they receive even more drawer space than my shirts, and I can never find the right pair without rifling through the stockpile for actual minutes."

What does elegance mean to you?

"Elegance is looking chic in the simplest looks. Charlotte Gainsbourg needs nothing more than some worn jeans and a T-shirt to look better than any other room in the room. If only we were all so lucky! "

Song: Their cell - Girl in a coma

Girls with Allure: Trini

At last another issue of Girls with Allure is out. I am going to maintain, more or less, the questionnaire in all the interviews.

This time I had the pleasure to interview Trini. In her early twenties, she's already a fashion designer and has recently moved from her home country, Chile to Madrid.

Style. "My style is just plain me. An extension of who i am. I don't think it can be defined.I'm influenced on certain decades in fashion, 60s and 70s but really I don't think in anything else. I dress according to my mood and definitely in what i have to do in my day. "

Who are your favourite designers?
"Luella Bartley, Phillip Lim and Yvan Mispelaere."

Predict a trend for next season. What will be wearing in four months?

"For spring i think we will be full of little flowery print dresses, which i personally adore. "

A book, a film, and a song:

"Chanel: Her style and her life by Janet Wallach.

La finestra di fronte .

After hours - The Velvet Underground."

Fetish: "Hats and shoes. I collect them."

As a designer, what is your reaction at the raise of celebrities turned into "designers"?

"Well it just lets you know anyone can "design" know a days. Anyone who is in the media at least. Some do it good but mostly don't. Perfect example of who don't J-LO,Gwen Stefani, or Beyonce. They design trashy clothes and are not by any chance at the level of designers who did study the matter at college. It just shows."

What is, in your opinion, the best garment ever designed? "Pants/shorts for women!"

Which beauty product you can't live without? "Red nail polish."

Do you see a big difference between the way people dress in Spain, and your home country?

"Yes, here people are more into fashion. They are more concerned of details and accessories. Men specially. "

What does elegance mean? "Refined. Audrey Hepburn."
Song: After hours - The Velvet Underground.

Girls with Allure : Alix, the cherry blossom girl.

As you read this, a new section called, Girls with Allure, is making its debut. From time to time, I will post an interview with a gal talking about her style.

It doesn't occur to me anybody better to start it with than Alix, aka the cherry blossom girl. She has just left the design school and although she lives in Paris, she claims the city doesn't really influences her style. People at the city of light are classic, and narrow-minded concerning trends. However, several internships at Chloé and Alexander McQueen might have influenced the way she dresses.

She defines her style as romantic, but not "too girly". She likes vintage clothing "such as old laces, retro prints or granny knitted jumpers, navy costumes, or 70's trousers and blouses mixed with brands like zara or h&m" and some designer pieces. But she always takes her time to find a good piece always following her heart.

She likes young, fresh and pure girls like those featured in David Hamilton's photography or Sofia Coppola's films. It comes to no surprise her love for baby doll dresses, light and floaty fabrics, and floral prints. Alix, doesn't fancy colourful clothing, and adds lots of accessories to give her outfits a twist: "I use scarves, brooches, long necklaces, vintage bags, and I'm fond of tights which are really practical when somebody is wearing so much skirts and dresses as me!"

What's in your bag? "some magazines of the moment such as Jalouse and the Lula issue number 5, my I-pod, cell phone, a small sketchbook, color pens (I like to make drawing anywhere), lip balm, red lipstick I use for lips and cheeks, vintage wallet, a small umbrella, Paris map (I'm an ignorant citizen), a little candy box , keys, and boyfriend pictures (haha what a sentimental). "

You smell to... "At the moment it's "daisy" by Marc Jacobs, I also like "premier jour" by Nina Ricci and "éclat d'arpège" by Lanvin "

A book, a film, and a song: "my favorite book is "l'écume des jours" by Boris Vian, my favorite film is "the virgin suicides" by Sofia Coppola, and my favorite song is "cherry blossom girl" by Air"

Do you have a fetish? "not at all, but I must admit I'm a bit attracted to shoes."

What is, in your opinion, the best garment ever designed? "the dress! easy and always feminine."

Which beauty product you can't live without? "I'm not using makeup so much, but sometimes my skin turns a little bit red, especially during winter, that's why I'm really keen on the Chanel double perfection fluid foundation, it's so light and soft! I also use many different day and night face creams, the ones from the brand "doux me" are the best on my sense.

Who are your favourite designers? "Sofia Kokosalaki, Riccardo Tisci for Givenchy, Nicolas Guesquière for Balenciaga, Consuela Castiglioni for Marni, and Stella McCartney. I was a huge fan of Phoebe Philo for Chloé. I'm also fond of the line unique for Topshop."

Do you have a style icon? Who is she/he? "not really, but sometimes I'm a bit inspired by Kirsten Dunst outfits. I've been inspired a lot by movies characters, the very first one being Mathilda (Natalie Portman) in "Leon", and then of course the Lisbon sisters."

What does elegance mean to you? "stay natural...and smile! the clothes make part of the job but not everything!"

Song: Cherry Blossom Girl - Air
