Jim French

jim french

Today's post is dedicated to a certain picture instead of a photographer. Its author was Jim French and it was the image that illustrated The Smiths first single; Hand in Glove. Its strong homoerotic charge matched the lyrics perfectly, but made it controversial. The song didn't reach the success it deserved when it first camed out but, for me, its sleeve is one of the best in pop music history.

DIY: Red velvet brooch

59615713

I like the collection Alexa Chung did for Madewell overall, but I find it a bit over-priced -especially taking into account most of them are pieces you can easily find at the high-street-. No where to be found here, I content myself using it as a mere source of inspiration.

After seeing the first picture, I remembered I lost the bead that dangled from one of my favourite brooches. It was then when I thought I could do something with the remains. I only needed a bit of red velvet ribbon. If you want to repeat it at home is pretty easy; you'll need an old brooch (in case you don't have one, you can find tons in etsy or ebay) and the ribbon you can buy at any haberdashery. It's a simple and affordable way to update your old winter coat.

William Eggleston

Anyone who takes a quick look at this blog will notice that I feel drawn to black and white photography. But that doesn't mean I despise colour. I can't think of anyone better than William Eggleston, one of the first colour photographers to be taken seriously, to prove it. I love the warm colours of his pictures and his particular way of turning the mundane into art.

Sandie Shaw

DR1001_Sandie_SHAW 1219

Sandie Shaw had been off my radar until a few days ago, when a biography of The Smiths made me rediscover her figure. The fact that Morrissey has always been a fan of "the barefoot princess" awoke my curiosity (Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Know pays homage to Heaven Knows I'm Missing Him Now). While googling her I discovered pictures like the ones that illustrate this post and I couldn't resist sharing them here.

I'm Missing Him Now).

Frank Eugene

frank_eugene

Frank Eugene helped to lay the foundantions of photography at the end of the 19th century. In fact, he was the first person in the world who started teaching photography at university contributing to dilute its perception as a minor art. He was also a pioneer in manipulating negatives, filling his classic images with haze and mistery.

Back to classics

These pictures are part of one of my all time favourite editorials. Their timeless vibe make them a classic. I believe they were published on Harper's Bazaar in 1994, but they still look fresh. That's the difference between fashionable and stylish, for me. If you own your outfit, if you stay true to you, you'll never look outdated. Meanwhile if your only aim is to follow trends, that's when you'll look ridiculous and old-fashioned.

Moodboard

winter moodboard definitivo

Autumn air already cools the skin while routine approaches irremediable. Days are shorter whereas nights feel endless. After a break that seemed eternal, it's time to unravel the life that faces me. I read Machado trying -and failing miserably- to forget and to take my mind off from forbidden thoughts, I make collages.

Song of the week: I can't turn you loose

I can't think of a better way to start the week than with a dose of energy courtesy of Mr. Pitiful.

Helen Levitt

Helen Levitt was one of the first photographers who started taking "street photography". Her work is a sincere look at the streets of New York working-class neighborhoods. The mischievous smiles of children, their dances and innocent games set the audience in a familiar atmosphere that not many people associate with the big apple. Things aren't always what they seem and this is a good reminder of why we should forget conventions.
